A vehicle photo checklist for independent used-car dealerships
Make your photos a useful walkaround, not just a collection of attractive angles. A repeatable shot list helps buyers assess a vehicle and helps sales reps avoid missing or mismatched photos.
Prepare the car and the location
Clean the vehicle, remove personal belongings and choose a well-lit area with a simple background. Avoid harsh glare when possible. Check that no customer documents or personal information appear in the frame.
Confirm the stock number before shooting. Use it to label the upload or folder so similar vehicles do not get mixed together.
Capture this shot list
- Exterior overview — Front three-quarter view, rear three-quarter view, both sides, front and rear.
- Interior — Front seats, rear seats, dashboard, console and cargo area.
- Mileage — A readable odometer photo; verify it against the listing record.
- Details — Wheels, tire condition, engine bay and notable equipment.
- Condition — Clear close-ups of scratches, dents, wear and other known issues, with a wider view for context.
Order the photos like a walkaround
Lead with a clear exterior overview showing the whole vehicle. Follow with other exterior views, interior views, mileage and details. Keep condition photos visible rather than hiding them behind repetitive angles.
Check the thumbnail crop and remove blurry, duplicate or mismatched images. Do not edit away damage or add equipment the vehicle does not have.
A repeatable handoff for the team
ListLot lets your team add lot photos from a phone to a vehicle record and strips GPS/EXIF metadata server-side. Still review the visible image: metadata removal does not hide addresses or documents photographed in the scene.
- Upload photos to the correct stock number.
- Assign one person to check coverage, image clarity and sensitive information.
- Mark the photo set ready only after review.
- Recheck photos if the vehicle’s condition changes or a rep adds new shots.
How many photos should a dealership take per car?
Use enough to cover exterior, interior, mileage, important features and known condition issues. The needed number varies by vehicle and channel; complete coverage matters more than a fixed count.
Can I use one photo set across listing channels?
Yes, if the photos show the actual vehicle accurately. Check each channel’s format and upload limits and update the set when the vehicle changes.
